Alternative Art Spaces
- Artists Space - A pioneer in alternative space movement, Artists Space was founded in 1972 as a non-profit institution supporting unaffiliated contemporary artists working in the visual arts, including the media of video, performance, architecture and design.
- Dia Center for the Arts - The name Dia, taken from the Greek word meaning "through," suggests the center's role in enabling the realization of extraordinary artistic projects. Dia plays a vital and original role among arts institutions in New York, as well as nationally and internationally, by initiating, supporting, presenting, and preserving projects in nearly every artistic medium, and creating a primary locus for interdisciplinary art and criticism.
- Franklin Furnace - Franklin Furnace was founded in 1976 to serve artists who chose publishing as a primary, artistic medium, and were not being supported by existing artistic organizations. It provides a collection of artists' books; a performance art program for emerging artists; and exhibitions of time-based arts, both site-specific works by contemporary artists, and historical and contemporary exhibitions.
- Hallwalls - Founded by contemporary artists, Charles Clough and Robert Longo, Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center is a multi-disciplinary arts center in Buffalo, NY which for over 20 years has presented contemporary art to audiences in the Western New York region. Hallwalls' mission is to support the creation and presentation of new work in the visual, media, performing, and literary arts.
- The Kitchen - The Kitchen is an interdisciplinary laboratory for visionary emerging and established artists. It has been a powerful force in shaping the cultural landscape of this country for over two decades, and is internationally renowned for its early support of artists who have gone on to receive world-wide stature, such as Philip Glass, Laurie Anderson, Cindy Sherman and Robert Longo.
- The Mattress Factory - Located in Pittsburgh, PA, The Mattress Factory is research and development lab for artists who take risks and experiment with new ideas to create site-specific installations.
- Mass Moca - Located in the Berkshire mountains in MA, Mass Moca is a center for visual, performing and media arts.
- The Newseum - The Newseum, the only interactive museum of news, takes visitors behind the scenes to see and experience how and why news is made.
- Participant inc - Provides a venue for curators, artists, writers, and educators to present projects of cultural value and artistic experimentation.
- Tate Modern - Tate Modern is Britain's new national museum of modern art. Housed in the former Bankside Power Station, Tate Modern displays the Tate's collection of international modern art from 1900 to the present day, including major works by Bacon, DalĂ, Picasso, Matisse, Rothko and Warhol as well as contemporary artists.
- Visual Studies Workshop - Located in Rochester, NY the Visual Studies Workshop is an internationally recognized center for media studies, including photography, visual books, electronic imaging and film/video.
