  • Web Museum : Joseph Cornell - An American sculptor, and one of the pioneers and most celebrated exponents of assemblage. You can see some of his work at this site. For more on Joseph Cornell's contributions to assemblage art go to Artcyclopedia.

Installation Art and Performance Art

Installation or Installation Art - Art made for a specific space, exploiting certain qualities of that space, more often indoors than out. Installations may be temporary or permanent, but most will be known to posterity through documentation. (artlex)

  • The Mattress Factory - Located in Pittsburgh, PA, the Mattress Factory plays a fundamental role as a research and development lab for in-residence installation artists from all over the world.

  • Vanguard Visions - A not for profit corporation created to provide wider audiences, new venues and independent networks for an artistic vanguard exploring and defining multimedia in the performing and installation arts. Vanguard Visions enables artists to move their work out of the margins and gain access to a wider, more varied public.

Conceptual Art

Conceptual Art - Art that is intended to convey an idea or a concept to the perceiver, rejecting the creation or appreciation of a traditional art object such as a painting or a sculpture as a precious commodity. Conceptual Art emerged as a movement in the 1960s. The expression "concept art" was used in 1961 by Henry Flynt in a Fluxus publication. (artlex)
